MICK CONNOLLY'S WEEK
The Age
Saturday November 7, 2009
The race that stops a street THE first Tuesday in November. The alternate Melbourne Cup without horseflesh, cash or drunks. Locals, an inner-city community gathered by word-of-mouth. The fifth annual running of a race with no promotion, no publicity, no permit and no possibility of insurance.Ssssh, don€™t say where it is.No money changes hands. The bottom line exists only to complete a tattoo.Colour and music are squandered shamelessly.Successful because it€™s subversive and silly, billycarts at little more than jogging pace. Fire brigade and ambos come and watch and laugh their guts out.And again next year, maybe . . .
